One Week Down

So today I started my second week of school and it is becoming more real to me. Last week was pretty much just getting the children situated and teaching them classroom rules and today we started doing a bit more teaching. It was a little difficult because my teacher wanted me to do all of this stuff that I was not really used to. For instance, the margin thing! She kept saying, “They need to rule up!” and I had to politely ask her what that meant so that I could teach it properly because it is new to me. But anyway, this is a learning experience and I am for sure learning lots! Catie and I went on our daily walk again this evening and we were talking about how much we missed home and we missed the super bowl and we have dreams about getting off the plane and having all of our friends and family waiting for us when we come back in April! But then we decided that type of attitude wasn’t helping anything and we need to enjoy our time here and get the most out of it that we can! So with that, please continue to talk to the big man upstairs for me that he will give me strength and guidance during my time here. It really means the world to me to come home at night and know that I can write in this blog and read your comments from the previous day, thank you all for caring about me so much! I really wish I could post pictures more easily but hopefully I will be able to get on facebook or something soon so I can do that. Sorry this is a much shorter entry, but nothing too exciting happened at school today except one of my students told me that I sound like Pink and another came to me at crunch and sip to show me that his apple had a sticker on it that said USA. Haha I didn't really know what to say so I just said, "Yay, go America!"

Also, please keep the people from Queensland in your prayers. Today at school we had a moment of silence for them because there have been horrible fires and a lot of them have had to evacuate. It seems that there are three extremes in Australia – flooding, fires and drought. Luckily, I am not in any of those regions, it’s just hot as over here!

  1. Heeey kathleeenn! Funny how i noticed no one really posted on Sunday. Typical americans We do Nothing on the weekends. I waited to see if anyone else would confirm your question about the Sunday Readings and You are correct. The readings are the Same World Wide. We had the Salt of the Earth as well as Corinthians. Maybe no one else was listening but I was so proud of your comments. Someone google earhed your address there and if it is the House I saw it looks like a nice neighborhood. The People across the Street have a backkyard pool so you should make friends with them. You should go out everyday look up into the sky and wave frantically. you never know if that is the moment Satellite is capturing and we could see you. Haha that would be so funny.

Anywho we will keep praying have a great week
    Love you

  2. Kathleen: So happy to hear you are doing so well and learning so much every day. We saw the house/neighborhood from Google Earth and your neighborhood (if it was the right neighborhood) looked really clean and very nice houses. Danny had a good idea about meeting the neighbors and maybe taking a dip in the pool. The houses seem to be very close together. It is such a big country, it looks like they could have spread them out a little. You mentioned The Outback in one of your old blogs. Do they have a restaurant called that, or is that purely an American restaurant? Waiting to hear from you soon. Love you. . .Grandma & Grandpa

  3. Positive thoughts Kath! Fremantle this weekend? That should be fun! Maybe you could go to the wine country too. I think it's SE of Perth. Seen any joey's?? Or a mama 'roo? Fremantle looks like it has a beautiful harbor.

  4. It is so interesting to hear all the funny phrases they use, like rule up, hot as, etc. The only one I can think of besides "throw another shrimp on the barbie" is "Maybe the dingo ate your baby" from that Meryl Streep movie. That probably wouldn't be a good one to throw out in just any old conversation though.

I was just catching up on your blog today. We have been preoccupied with Josh's mom. She just got diagnosed with lung cancer and it is in her spine also. We went to see her this weekend. She had just started chemo on Friday. Please pray for her to not be in pain and for the cancer to shrink. She is so sweet it just breaks our hearts to know what she is going through.

I know it must be so strange to not hear our southern accents everywhere. Change is good, though, and so maybe you will have a southern aussie accent when you come home!

I liked your reply...yay, go America! Niiiiiiice, good one! It can be our new mantra.

    Love you! Aunt Cyndie

  5. Kathleen,
I love reading your posts, I want to comment on everything but I dont want to be too much of an "uncle danny" (just kidding- Uncle Danny, i really love reading your comments). Speaking of other people's comments, Cyndie, please know that I will be praying for Josh's mother. I hope that she takes well to the treatments. She and the family will be in my prayers!

Kathleen- the super bowl wasn't all that great, the halftime show was pretty bad (the sound was messed up and there were lots of unfortunate things that went wrong). Oh yeah, and Christina Aguilera totally butchered the National Anthem and sang the wrong words- is she even American???
I remember when I studied abroad in Italy i was trying to remember all of the things that were different in Europe from the states and I was going to check to see which way the toilets flushed and in Italy- the water just goes straight down like a gushing waterfall, no swirling. Also, the ambulance sounded really different, after a while I couldnt remember what the state's ambulance sounded like anymore, I had to call Zana and tell her to "sing" it to me, that was hilarious. Can you imagine Zana singing the ambulance sound???
Also, news about Emma- She's allergic to strawberries...harram, she was breaking out really bad with a rash and she was grabbing at things to scratch. Zana said she used the remote control to scratch her rash. Also, I was on the phone with Zana this morning (she might get mad if I post this, but it's funny and everyone deserves to know) and Emma was crying in the background, then she would stop, then cry again, then stop and Zana said that the only way she could make her stop crying was to "booty" dance in the kitchen while she was doing dishes, the second she stopped booty dancing, Emma would cry. It was SO FUNNY!

I'm so proud of you for what you're doing. I'll keep praying for you to have the strength you need to get the most of this opportunity. I think you'll be really surprised how fast this goes and I dont want you to get all the way to end and regret not getting the most of it because so much of you missed everyone back home. Remember when you came to Seattle for that summer and were so worried about missing things back home, and then when it was time to go you were like...ohhh, that was really fast and you were really sad to leave all of the new friends you had made. Keep that in mind, you're developing relationships with people you may never see again. Make the most of it and get as much as you can from it, it'll be over before you know it...and it'll be a sad day for a lot of people when you have to leave them! You're not just creating memories for youself, you're going to be a HUGE part of other people's memories as well.
    I LOVE YOU!

  7. hey kathleenie! we missed you at olivia's birthday party =) i can't believe she is already seven years old! she got one of those spinning art things...where you put the cardboard square on the wheel and the thing spins around while you drop paint onto it, and it comes out like a tie-dye thing. so she and evelyn and i were playing with it and we didn't realize there was a splatter guard to keep the paint from flying everywhere. it was definitely interesting hahahaha

i also googled what fanny means in austrailian. it was on a list of other american words not to say in Austrailia. the funniest one was the name Randy, because "randy" has a crude translation in austrailia apparently...haha

hope you're doing well! i'm praying for you =)

  9. WOW! I am so thankful to have all of you in my life and I am smiling from ear to ear reading these comments!

Uncle Danny - pretty much everyone in the neighborhood has a poole (except us) so I have been able to go just about every day and it is so nice! Mama emailed me about the readings being the same and I just really think that is so neat! I guess that is why Catholic means Universal!

G.ma and G.pa - this whole city is probably the most clean city I have ever been to! They take very good care of the environment here! They have a restaurant called The Outback but it is not the same as ours but I think it is fairly similar. Ill have to eat there sometime and let you know!

Daddy - havent seen a single kangaroo yet! I have been on the lookout but no luck! Yes, Freemantle this weekend! Cant wait!!

Aunt Cyndie -- So sorry to hear about Uncle Josh's mom. I will def be praying for her. The phrases are pretty funny. Actually I talked to someone about "Put another shrimp on the barbie" but they said they would never say that because they call shrimp prawns! Nice, good one! Leopard Girl, Woo!! the list is never ending...

Leila -- thank you so much! You always have such great insight! You are totally right. I am thankful that I am here and I am making a promise to myself right now that I will stay positive and do as much as I can while I'm here. Love you!

Lele - I love those thigs! I hope I can use it when I get home! 7 years old! wow! Please tell her I said hey! hmm randy..Ill have to look that one up or ask someone... Love you!

pete -- the famous JT! wonder if he has been to the casino lately?! Glad to hear the retreat went well! You can always call me back you know! See you on the 21st of April! loe u
